It simply stood there, staring at the farmhouse with a terrifying, unblinking focus.
By Thursday, the atmosphere on the farm had curdled. The chickens stopped laying. The farm dog, a brave hound named Buster, refused to leave the porch, whimpering whenever the wind blew the scent of the goat toward him. And then there were the sounds at night—not the sounds of an animal, but the sound of something heavy dragging itself in circles, accompanied by a low, rhythmic thrumming that vibrated through the floorboards.
