: Night Watch Tuesday, October 6th, 2026 Albemarle County, Charlottesville, Virginia 2:00 am Silence surrounds the night; the air has a cold heart. No cars are roaming the streets or a person in sight. All of the stores are closed. The nearby neighbors are sound asleep. The sidewalks are filled with trash. Feral cats are fiddling around with the litter. Some cars are on the curb, including a Charlottesville Police Dodge Charger. Flashing lights of red, white, and blue are not on.

Kenzie said conspiratorially as she let go of my arm and stopped to look in one of the shops. “I got it,” Daisy said as she took Kenzie’s place by my side. “Let’s go to Circus Circus.” “Really? You know I hate clowns,” I said. “There’s Excalibur. Maybe they have one of those knight shows going on that we can catch,” Daisy said as I felt her stop short. I turned to find a strange hunched over man in a long trench coat standing at the mouth of the doorway. His beard was long, and his hair stringy. My first impression was to bolt from him as quickly as possible.

​"Leo..." ​The surrounding noise of the night seemed to fade into absolute silence. The muffled, heavy thud of the club music behind the metal doors, the groans of the four men bleeding out on the wet pavement, the quiet drip of rain falling off the brick walls—it all died away. The entire world shrank down to just the two of them standing under the flickering yellow streetlight. ​They simply stared at each other for a full, agonizing minute. Neither of them moved. Neither of them dared to breathe.

“If I had to be cut from my mother’s belly, would I be overcome by the urge to leave a house by climbing out the window each day? You’re drunk.” When August and the twins drew near to the stone circle, Decimus’ head jerked, facing the forest. Crispinus, his mirror image, repeated the look as if a tether connected the two. “What?” Crispinus asked, though, confused by why his sibling looked away. Bow tip pointed into the greenery, Decimus said, “There.” August jeered the soldier, asking, “More game?” Decimus gave his superior an indignant look, one his brother aped in a moment. “In the woods, sir. Look yourself.”

“The pier. Where it all started. Where we made a baby.” He hummed against my skin. “Possibly the best night of my life.” “You know I was staying pretty much next door to where you live?” “Don’t tell me that,” he said with a groan. I turned in his arms. “The W.” A growl of frustration left him and his forehead fell against mine. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” “Yeah.” “Yeah,” he said with a shake of his head. He turned me slightly. “You can’t see from this angle, but on the other side of the second tower of this complex is the W. It literally is right next door.”

"And don't come back. If you value your life, leave this place and never return." The hunter scrambled to his feet, clutching his injured shoulder. He hesitated, eyes wide with disbelief, before turning and fleeing into the darkness. Selene watched him go, her heart pounding from the confrontation. With her arm still bleeding, Selene continued her journey to Ethan's palace. She moved stealthily, avoiding the guards and relying on her heightened senses to navigate the territory. As she approached the main entrance, she encountered an invisible barrier. The air shimmered with a faint, magical glow, a spell cast by the witches to protect the palace.

I push the thought away, swallowing hard as I lift my chin. This is what I want. The night air is thick with excitement as the circus performance comes to an end. The fire dancers take their final bow, the acrobats disappear into the crowd, and the energy shifts. The pack knows what’s coming next. The real event of the night. The announcement of their Luna.

We all knew the real star of this show was; from the first time I saw that ribbon drop from the ceiling, I knew Elsie was the star of the show. There, in the front row of the stands, you can catch sight of the main character. The circus always makes a special stop for a private party when the heat sticks to your skin and a chorus of wolves can be heard through the bayou. That night is for the Sundrop pack; that night is for Elsie; that night is for us all to celebrate how far we've come and where we are now.
