I said. "No," Victor said. "You are a pivot." I stood with that word for a moment. It was different from the other words they had used around me, different from asset or solution or piece or even the word necessary that my father had used with such comfort. Pivot implied movement, implied that things shifted around me rather than that I was simply stationary and being applied to problems. "Things change direction around you," he said, as though following my thought. "Whether you act or do not act, whether you choose or are chosen. You are a point that alters trajectories."
