Under the streetlight stood a tall man, snow collecting in his dark hair. I blinked, hardly believing what I saw. I murmured, "Christopher?" Christopher Joyner turned toward me, his face lighting up despite the freezing air. His nose was red from the cold, and in his hands was a bouquet. He smiled as he walked toward me. "Didn't you say you wanted to see the first snow with the person you love most?" My chest tightened. He had been working late just last night, yet because of one offhand comment I had made, he caught a red-eye flight just to see me.

"Promise me you will not let him win. Promise me." I had promised. Of course I had promised. What else do you say to your dying brother, holding his hand in a room that smelled like antiseptic and quiet grief, except yes, I promise, whatever you need, I will not let this be the end of the story. I had not known, in that moment, what the promise would actually cost. I had not known it would take four years, a journal hidden in a storage unit, a marriage I would deliberately insert myself into the wreckage of, a contract, a fake engagement that had stopped being fake somewhere along the way without my fully noticing when.

“isabella, if I were going to kill you, I would tell you. Believe me, I want to see you cry and scream. I get off on that shit. He stopped in front of me then looked down, annoyance written all over his face “Promise me?” I whispered. Listening to him make a promise was the only way I could really trust him. He said he would always be honest with me, so listening to a promise shouldn’t make a difference. And if he was a liar, he wouldn’t have a problem making an endless line of promises because he would break every single one of them but it made me feel better.
