The rain had started again, a slow drizzle that painted the world in shades of gray. Mateo stood at the edge of the clearing, eyes scanning the tree line as the scent of wet earth filled his lungs. Behind him, Isabella’s laughter rang softly through the cabin, a fading echo of the rare peace they had found. But peace never lasted. Elena burst through the door, her boots soaked, her face pale. “We have a problem.” Mateo turned instantly, his hand reaching for the gun on the counter. “What is it?”

She watched as the water droplets repeatedly loses themselves into the pool of water. The sight was strangely satisfactory. The shooting took lesser time then they had expected. It was already done and she was in her room. Tomorrow they all will fly back to Spain. The crew was out on a trip to Amsterdam. She stayed back as she had already seen the places they were planning to visit.

The first punch landed like thunder in a cathedral. No one breathed. Not the valet cowering behind the podium, not the older couple watching through the restaurant window, and certainly not Emilia Torres, who stood frozen just feet away—caught in the pull of a nightmare she never asked to relive. I wrapped her in my arms tightly and breathed in her lovely scent.
