The Space Between Novels & Stories

The room did not feel like a room anymore. It felt like a space that had stopped agreeing to be physical. Even the air seemed delayed, as if it was arriving slightly after it was needed. Anna stood close enough to Adrian that the system no longer had to simulate distance. There was none left that mattered. The silence between them was not empty now. It was structured. Like something waiting for a final instruction that neither of them had agreed to give. Adrian’s gaze stayed on her.

They say the worst thing about distance is we don’t know whether they miss you or forget you but what if they don’t even give a sign that they feel your presence even after looking at you everyday… I walked inside Ayesha’s room and whispered ‘Good night’ placing a small peck on her forehead and walked outside. It must either be Mr grey or Adam and I don't think I'm ready for anybody's touch or anything. Then, Mr. Grey appeared at the doorway. His tall frame was casting a shadow on the tiled floor. His sleeves were rolled up now, and his hands were in his pockets. “You handled dinner well,” he said in a low voice. I gave a small nod, without meeting his eyes and said . “Thank you.” A pause stretched between us, it was heavy with something unspoken. He took a few steps closer, his shoes was silent on the floor. “But you looked... unsettled.” he added.

She opened them deliberately and took a small step back, and the inch of space between us felt enormous in the way that space between bonded people always felt enormous, noticed and wrong in a way that ordinary distance never did. I let her have it. She needed it and I knew she needed it and so I stood on my side of the barrier and gave her the inch and waited.

Three notes carried separately for decades by two people in different cities who had no idea the other was carrying them. Landing here. On a Thursday evening. In a small sitting room. He looked at her. She looked at him. And the space between them, which had been managed and measured and maintained and then quietly and stubbornly narrowed, became something that required no name to be real. It simply was. It had always been. From before either of them knew it was happening. “Twenty-three days,” she said softly. “Yes,” he said. “And then everything after,” she said. “Yes.”

No tension. No unanswered question demanding resolution. Just space. And the realization that space Could either become distance. Or something else entirely. And for the first time She didn’t know which one it would be.

Nothing that sounds like I’ve made a decision without him. “Honestly, I’ve never really understood why people put space between them when they’re trying to fix things,” I say carefully. “How is space supposed to help anyone get closer again?” He narrows his eyes. “That’s not an answer.” “I meant it,” I say quickly. “We’re a couple, right? Space isn’t what we need. If anything… maybe we’ve had too much of it. With me doing this, going to meet other men, it’s felt like we’ve been apart already.”
