I said to her with a smile. She looked like she wanted to disagree with me or perhaps argue for a while, she said nothing for what seemed like a long time and then she leaned forward and placed a kiss on my forehead “Goodnight Alec” she whispered and then pulled away from me, the smell of roses following her as she left the room. My eyes drifted back to Brianne on the bed, she looked tired even in her sleep, I hated to think of the life she must have lived for the past two years.

"Of course." "Thank you," she said, with the warm, professional brevity of someone closing a small administrative matter. He was still looking at her. She was still looking at him. Five years of distance and everything it contained occupied the space between them with a density that had no business being invisible and yet was — invisible to the room, invisible to the three hundred people none of whom were looking at this window at this precise moment, present only to the two of them and entirely legible to both.

Her roommate chuckled and nodded, they said their goodbyes to each other then turned their back. Hailey rolled her eyes and let out a sigh.

The light flared violently, and suddenly, the space shifted. We were standing in what looked like the temple—but not the real one. This version was made of glowing lines, like a memory sketched in light. The priestess was a blur of motion, her mouth moving but her voice silent. We could see Aaron too, standing within his golden barrier, his form flickering between solid and shadow. “Are we seeing… both sides?” I asked softly. Edward nodded slowly. “Maybe. This is the space between—the merging point.” The thought sent a chill down my spine. If this was the in-between, then what happened if we couldn’t find our way back?

I was too drained to care. I went straight to class and dropped into my seat, pulling out my notebook. The door opened. Our teacher stepped in—and behind him was Liam. “Good morning class” the teacher greeted. Liam walked over calmly and sat next to me. Here's a revised version: "Hey," he said softly. "Uh... hi," I replied, not sure how to act. Class started, but I couldn’t stop noticing him next to me. At one point, he leaned closer. “Do you mind helping me later?” he whispered. “I’m still catching up. Maybe we could partner for the history project.”

With something more focused. “Then show me the difference.” That was all I needed. I stepped in again. Closer this time. Forcing the space between us to collapse instead of stretch. Her reaction came instantly. Too fast to be instinct. Too precise to be guesswork. She turned before I moved. Her hand came up exactly where mine would have been. I hadn’t stepped yet. But she had already responded. The space between us froze. Neither of us moved. Not for a second. Not for a breath.

He too knew that his way of treating Gianna was different from his interactions with an ordinary friend. For the past few days, Gianna had gotten closer to Danyel, and both of them felt like it was something more than a friendship. But Danyel had Yasvie. He was already on a path in which Gianna had no space to exist. They were in two different worlds which were never meant to meet. I let the space between us be what it was, which was not the comfortable space of the last three years but something newer and more uncertain, something that had not yet decided what shape it was going to take. I thought: this is what repair looks like from the inside. It is not dramatic. It is not a single moment of resolution. It is the slow, deliberate work of waking up in the same bed as someone and letting the distance between you be honest, and not pretending it is smaller than it is, and not making it larger than it needs to be, and waiting to see what the structure can still hold.

RED POV The space between has its own fucking texture. I've been learning it for ten days straight. Ten days since the night I went to his room and the morning after when I sat on my bed telling myself to get my shit together and the evening he stood in my doorway saying my name like it was something sacred before walking away. Ten days of this space between—not pushing, not pulling back, neither of us naming what the fuck is happening between us or what it means to move through it together.
