If I could not become its vessel now, I would find another way. I would control it. The doors groaned as I pushed them open, revealing a massive library carved into the rock. The torches burned with an eerie blue light, illuminating countless scrolls and ancient tomes. Only a few knew of this place. Fewer still dared to enter. The Dark Spirit had been summoned before—long ago, before my time. The answers I sought lay in these pages. I strode forward, grabbing an old book from the nearest shelf. Dust rose in the air as I flipped through the brittle pages, my eyes scanning the ancient symbols.

My nostrils flared as I sucked in deep breaths, fighting to keep my wits about me. “What do you want from me?” I rasped. If I could get it talking, then maybe I could find a way out of this. I wouldn’t. But it was worth a shot. The spirit moved to one side, its footsteps slow, predator-like. It moved to the other side, its gaze never leaving me. Its mouth opened wider, and it laughed. “Blood.” Blood? “Why?” The spirit crouched, ready to attack. “Thiiiiirsty.”

But now, as it sat there, I knew. Finding that dusty book on the back of the highest shelf in the sprawling library had been no accident; it had found me. And Selena wanted me to finish the ritual. It spoke of the Hollow Revenant: born from the first soul denied burial, bound by blood-oaths, sustained by external animus.
