LOVE ON THIN ICE
The rink smelled like cold air, melted rubber from skates, and a faint chemical tang from the resurfacing machine.
We set up camp on the bleachers: my laptop, Gabrielle’s camera case, notebooks, a stack of printouts that I intend to read as a reference and a thermos of something Gabrielle insisted was coffee but smelled like shit to me.
Gabrielle worked with the intensity of a person who believed phrases like “deadline” and “immediately” were propaganda.
She talked while she worked, mostly to herself, sometimes to me, running through ideas for the newsletter: angles, quotes, a plan for a photo spread.
