I get some whiskey and gulp it down. I have no right to be angry. I rejected her and she has every right to move on. I even picked a chosen mate on the same day as the rejection! So why do I feel so ticked off? I continue to drink and speak with the Dark Sky Alpha, Hunter. We have an alliance so I'm not worried about him at all. He's not a particularly strong Alpha either but just having another pack to count on if war breaks loose is always useful. I hear a commotion and look over. I see Grayson with a Dark Sky girl and from the way they're staring at each other, I can bet that she is his mate.

Ember may share the mate bond with Alpha Decker Emerson, but she was also a Fae, and Fae were strong. I refused to believe that she wouldn't be able to resist the mate bond if she wanted to. I just needed to make her want to.

But Caleb’s expression didn’t change, even as his eyes grew haunted. “I’m sorry, Emma,” he said to me, then out loud. “I reject you, Emma as my mate and hereby annul this mating ceremony” and then he turned and walked away, leaving me alone in front of everyone, humiliated and broken. I didn’t stay to see the reaction of the others. I turned, my heart racing with hurt and fury, and fled. My only thought was to escape, to get as far from Caleb, the pack, and the shattered future I’d dreamed of as I could.
