The polar night was supposed to be comforting.
Darkness here was thick, stable, and absolute. It pressed gently against the senses, calming the blood, dulling unnecessary thoughts.
For pureblood vampires and unborn offspring alike, this was the most suitable environment in existence. No sun, no disruption, no risk.
And yet, from that very night onward, I felt profoundly unsettled.
It wasn’t pain, not at first. It was an absence. A strange hollowness, as though something essential had been pulled from my body without leaving a visible wound behind.
