She watches and waits to see what you do with what you are given.
I look back at the woman on the bench and make my choice quietly. She shifts slightly, like her body knows it’s being observed even if her mind is elsewhere. Her breathing evens out by a fraction. I step closer at last, stopping where my presence will register without crowding her. She doesn’t recoil and that settles something I hadn’t named yet.
Whoever comes for her will not announce themselves or negotiate, but only expect compliance, silence, and return, and they will not get it. I do not speak the vow aloud, since oaths spoken too early invite challenge, but it forms all the same, solid and irreversible.
