He brought four burly guys in tank tops, carrying sledgehammers and jackhammers. He had a cigarette dangling from his mouth as he squinted at the load-bearing wall. He reached out and knocked on it, producing a dull echo. He said, "This wall? It's a shear wall, packed with rebar, a real tough one." He blew a smoke ring and flicked his ash directly onto the floor. "That's going to cost extra." Tom's mind was already filled with images of a panoramic floor-to-ceiling window, so he waved his hand grandly.

A wall. Not stone. Not wood. Something in between. It rose from the earth like a spine, curving upward until it vanished into the canopy. Its surface was smooth but not clean; it was covered in red handprints. Hundreds to thousands of them, Kieran thought they were clay. It was not. All of them facing inwards, this wall is warm; there must be something behind it. Something hot. Then nothing. Kieran stepped back. “It’s not time to leave,” he thought. “Not yet, at least.”
