Even the common homes are finer than before, made of grown quartz or marble and shaped for the needs of each resident. Even the scarred fields seem to be coming back to life. Smiling, I let my fingers brush against a hedge of starflower jasmine. We had a bush like this back at home in Ridgewood Manor. I breathed deep and saw him flap his ears. I needed to force myself to keep from holding my breath. The prince was as muddy and full of thorny prickles as the others. I poured the first bucket of warm water along his back, my bare hand running through his fur, and I felt him stiffen.

How it made his composed features even more striking, the way suffering always enhanced beauty. The warrior in Velis admired such restraint under pressure. The predator in him craved to see it shatter completely. Velis had endured countless of these empty rituals over the decades, parades of fattened nobles mouthing platitudes about peace while safely swaddled in privilege. But this one... this prince was different. He carried his lies like a penance. Wore his composure like a hairline-cracked mask. And Velis found himself wanting—no, needing—to see it break.

The Prince didn't back down, though, because he genuinely wanted his people to be happy. He was holding the picture in which he had posed with his soldier. They needed to be applauded for what they had done. Celina's uncle—the weapon master of the town, stood in the front—grinning boldly. Next to him stood Alexander, the guy in a bandana. Of course, Javier recognised him earlier. Someone knocked on his door, the sound echoing in his ears. Hurriedly he shut the photo album and turned over his shoulder. He witnessed Celina standing by the door, her eyebrows knitted together.

Feeling some sort of relief, Jade continued towards the exhibit. The left-wing was nearly empty, save for an elderly woman standing in front of a collection of swords and a younger man who was wandering about. Jade started to walk around, stopping by now and then to view some of the artifacts on display. She was particularly interested in an elaborate costume that supposedly came from the collection of a princess who lived during the Qin dynasty. “I know someone who’d look good in that,” Jade thought as she pictured the dress on Marie. The mental image made her laugh a little too loud, much to the disapproval of the older lady.
