Chapter One: A Chance at Normalcy ARIANA The forest sang beneath my paws. Every stride sent a rush of wind against my fur, the scents of pine and damp earth filling my nose like a soothing balm. Out here, I wasn’t the girl with blood on her name. I wasn’t the orphan whispered about in hushed tones. Out here, I was wild and free, my wolf untamed beneath the early morning sun.

As soon as I connect with my wolf, I’ll be able to heal too. Minutes turned into what felt like hours. My calves burned, my feet ached in these dumb academy shoes…not exactly hiking boots. Sweat dripped down my neck. I kept going, deeper, telling myself every step brought me closer. Then I heard it. A low grunt. Snuffling. Heavy footsteps crashing through the undergrowth. I froze. Out of the bushes charged a massive wild boar…bigger than any pig I’d ever seen, with tusks like knives and red-rimmed eyes locked on me. It snorted, pawed the ground, and lowered its head.

"Please, I want the book. One day I will understand." Brandt smiled and replied with humor, "If you ever make sense of it, let me know. You can then argue with my father on the merits of Christianity. He believes in the Goddess and loves nothing better than a good philosophical debate." He turned and picked up another book. It had a picture of a wolf with a snowy mountain background. "This is Jack London's Call of the Wild and it's the one we'll read first. Let's finish the cake and then get ready for our evening company."

But this year, the bitter winter lasted too long, and my heart heeded its sad song. “I don’t know. Daddy says they protect the city, but I don’t see how. They never do anything.” My finger stopped on a worn out book. The faded writing on the spine said Beasts Of The Wild. I pulled it out and flipped it open in the middle. There was a drawing of a yeti-looking creature called a yowg. The description gave details of height, size and hair colour. Dietary information and habitats were also included. I flicked through more pages and found more creatures, some of which I was familiar with. The names, at least. Unfortunately, the book wasn’t organised into alphabetical order, so I had to search a number of pages before I found what I was looking for: Mouse King.

I once told Mom I wanted to be a wolf in fact "Wolves are wild. Why would you want a wild animal or want to be one?" Mom would ask in her amazement "Because I love them" "I bet you'll run if one appears to you" she retorted and I didn't know what to say to that.
