**The Wild Wolves** Aria meandered through the lush, vibrant forest, a world alive with an intricate tapestry of sights, sounds, and scents. Each step enveloped her in the rich aroma of damp earth and blooming wildflowers, the vibrant hues of greens and browns intertwining like an artist's brushstrokes across the landscape. Having spent the past few weeks in this enchanted new home amidst the towering, ancient trees and dappled sunlight, she had cultivated a deep affection for the tranquility and solace the wilderness offered—a cherished escape from the chaotic clamor of her former life.

“It’s changed. The pecan waffles—it’s still there, but… sharper. Wilder.” I frowned, confusion flickering through me. “What does that mean?” He didn’t answer. Not directly. Instead, he took my hand firmly. “Then let’s run. Together.” The forest welcomed us with open arms. I let Skadii, my lycan, rise, the shift surging through me until fur stretched over muscle, and my paws struck the earth with thunderous joy. Skadii howled to the moon, her voice rich and wild, and the wind kissed her silver-and-onyx coat as we bounded between trees.

Chase shrugged his shoulder in obviousness. “The man here was busy saving some unknown girl in the woods instead of catching the roamer.” Wilder fumed, and continued, “as your friend, I seriously think that you need to take back control of your Lycan. You dropped the hunt for a random fucking girl out of the blue today.” “Mind your words, Wilder.” “My point is, we were just a few steps away from catching something new.” Wilder seethed, “and we lost it! Now all we can do is either just hope it has disappeared, or prepare for its surprise attack.”

Something seems off, but it’s not like we can tell them that. Shifting back, I sat kneeling on the grass. Immediately, Tahlia dropped her position. Her ears went back to their floppy-selves and her entire body relaxed. I reached out and she walked into my arms. Resting my head on hers, I closed my eyes. “I know you are just looking out for me, my sweet mate.” There was a grumbled from her and I laughed. Refocusing on the situation at hand, I reached out to Dallas again. ‘What happened to the first rogue?’

He is a sweet guy, who probably would save anyone's life if money was a factor in the equation, but I'm a big girl—I can handle myself! "You know..." Wilder says in a sing-song voice, smirking down at my hand that is busy feeling him up. I turn to stone, mortified by my actions and the knowing glint in his eye. "If you agree on becoming sex buddies with me, then you would have full access to all of this. My body would be yours for the taking." I lift an eyebrow. "Cocky much?" Wilder chuckles at me. "You're the one who can't keep her hands to herself—a little pervert you are."

And Wilder. Wilder was fire. Pine and rain and something under it, something old and tired and so, so angry, banked down low and held there by a will she could suddenly feel the size of. It was too much. All of it at once, a whole second world laid over the top of the one she knew. And under all of it, him. The shape of him. More than she'd ever agreed to know about anybody. Then it was gone. Brown eyes again. The ordinary dark of her own apartment came slamming back, and her knees went out from under her.

Soon, the laird would know of his son’s return. She twisted the reins nervously in her fingers as Crispen all but bounced off the saddle in his excitement. “If you keep gathering those reins, lass, you and the horse are going to end up back where you came from.” She glanced guiltily up at Alan Woods, who rode to her right. His admonishment had come out as a tease, but God’s truth, the man scared her. He looked savage with his unkempt, long dark hair and the braids dangling on each side of his temples.

We stepped out of the tunnel and into the Wilds. The Wilds were not like the managed forests around my home village. Here, the trees were ancient, their roots gnarled like the fingers of giants, and the air was thick with a primal magic that made the hair on my arms stand up. This was the land of the rogues, the exiles, and the creatures that even the Great Packs feared. Kaelen and two of Silas’s most trusted Sentinels—Harlan and Jace—were already waiting for us. They didn't speak. In the Wilds, noise was a death sentence.

“It doesn’t, child. Forever means we keep choosing.” Tare kicked dust. “But I’m tired of other people’s pain. I want my own sky.” That night, his moon pulsed red. Not from choice. From anger. He ran. Out of the Circle city. Past the buried stones that said *CHOOSE*. Past the gardens. Into the Wildlands where no wolves had gone in 500 years. The Wildlands were forbidden. Not by law. By memory. This was where the last temple of “one moon” crumbled. Where wolves once lived without choice.
