Lucas goes to the pantry and returns with some meat. He sets it on the counter and starts to carve. There comes a knock at the cabin door. "Are you expecting company?" "No." He goes over and answers it. There is a woman there. She peers straight past him. Straight at me. "I thought I saw you talking to someone outside," she says to Lucas. She barges past him into the cabin. "Who is she?" she demands. I stand and face her. "I am Marla," I say. "Marla?" she asks. "There is no Marla in our pack."

she said, her tone urgent as she gestured for us to enter. Relief flooded through me as we stepped into the dimly lit cabin. The interior was sparsely furnished, with worn-out furniture and a fireplace crackling with a dying flame. The scent of dried herbs hung in the air, mingling with the faint aroma of smoke. We waited, and after a few minutes, a short person clad in all black, including gloves, a long trench coat, a mask, and boots, walked toward the cabin. We watched without making a sound as they confirmed that there wasn't anyone, got in, and then got out in a matter of a minute. "Got an idea of who it is?" I mind-linked Caleb, who was hiding behind the cabin, watching through the space between the logs. "No, but they wrote something, and it is a woman, definitely," he replied.

Her gaze averted toward the corner of the room where a wooden cradle eased back and forth. "I'm not here to hurt you. I need to know who all stays in the cabins." She swallowed. "Just some of the maids and breeders. Who are you looking for?" I cursed myself for not getting her mother's name. "I'm not sure. She's human, been here for thirty something years—," "Caterina?" the girl said. "She's the only one that has been here that long. "She's two cabins over." "Thank you," I said softly. "Do you know an easier way out of here besides over the wall?"

Small as it is, it doesn’t look like the sort of building that would hide a prisoner as important as Kinney, but I guess that’s the point. “This is it,” Spencer whispers, placing his hand on the doorknob. Much to everyone’s surprise, the door is unlocked. Spencer opens it easily, and we all step inside, moving as silently as we can. Through the slivers of moonlight filtering in through a wide window, we’re able to make out the interior of the cabin. It’s a single room, sparsely furnished: a wooden bed, a table, two chairs, a barely-stocked kitchen, and a few large water barrels.

A frantic voice came from the cabin. Hansen's mind rumbled, and he quickly leaped into the cabin. A woman laid motionless in the cabin. Her clothes have been removed and her lower body was full of blood and dirt. It wasn't certain whether she had fainted or was dead. Hansen screamed with worry, "Jenna!" At that moment, all the men in the cabin left in an instant. Hansen quickly took his clothes off and draped them over her body. He bent down and took a closer look at the woman under the dim light.
