I turned, finding her across the room, eyebrows raised in genuine surprise. I held her gaze. "Yes, baby. Remember? We talked about wanting our own space. Time to ourselves." Recognition flickered. She caught on fast. "Oh. Right. Of course. Silly me." Gloria nodded slowly, though something in her expression suggested she wasn't entirely happy with the announcement. Mrs. Hartley still standing near the fireplace like a sentinel perked up immediately. "I know a cabin." Her voice carried authority. It made everyone in the room listen without realizing they'd stopped talking. "It's about ten minutes outside town. Very private. Beautiful view of the mountains."

She walked for a long time before she appeared in the woods where there was a cabin. She hurried into it and shut the door tightly behind her. The room was scanty. The old fashioned cushions blended perfectly with the ancient rug on the floor. She made her way to the table at the side of the room and turned on the lantern. The light illuminated the materials on it; an iPad, a burner home, a router, a telephone and a computer. The cabin was deep in the woods, so it was no surprise her phone had no network. The entire cabin was in turmoil. The five jumped off their beds and stood together, trembling all over as they stared at the situation outside the window. We cut through a side street that ran along the edge of the palace grounds. I'd been this way before but I hadn't really been paying attention to my surroundings. This time my eyes caught on something I'd missed. A cabin sat on the far edge of the grounds, smaller than Nala's but well kept. A pregnant woman was sitting on a rocking chair on the porch with her hands resting on her swollen belly. Other women surrounded her, some sitting on the steps and some standing in the grass, all of them talking and laughing like they had nowhere else to be.
