It had swollen a bit and turned purple. She glared at her husband, who raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "Does it hurt?" Nikki asked, never taking her eyes off his eye. "Not as much as my heart," he replied in a hoarse tone. That made his parents realize that he had apparently been crying. "I'm going to my room," Tom announced, and his mother stopped him.
