The Way He Looked at Me
“This is the best day! Tooth out, tooth fairy coming, Carter’s birthday soon, pancakes tomorrow, hockey three times next week! How many good things can happen at once?”
I watch him, innocence radiating, heart swelling. And just like that, Nathan flips the topic.
“You ever wonder… what does the tooth fairy do with all the teeth? There are so many kids. That’s a ton of teeth. She must need them for something, right?”
I laugh softly. “Good question, Nathan. I don’t know. But when I was a kid, my Aunt Mera said the tooth fairy loves piano music. Tiny pianos. Teeth make the keys. White teeth for white keys, rotten teeth for black ones. Magic, right?”
