The sudden violence shook my Trushul free from my sweater, the silver blessed trident glowing in warning of the demonic as bull-like horns grew from Zee's scalp, his skin dyeing a midnight blue, as a coiled tail snaked around to caress my legs.

If it weren't for the enormity of what was happening, he would have gotten many disgusted responses for doing that but in this kind of situation, no one had the gall to criticize him. Wolfsbane, on its own, was a toxic wolf repellent, but its combination with nightshade was simply deadly; no one could survive it.

The healer’s nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply, then recoiled. "Nightshade," he hissed. "Concentrated. Someone wanted her dead slowly." The room tilted. Nightshade wasn’t just poison—it was agony. A creeping, insidious thing that burned through halfling blood like battery acid on steroids.

Its eyes glowed with an unnatural intensity, and a sense of dread settled over me. The Nightshade pack had unleashed something beyond my expectations.

I came straight here.” I ripped the seal and pulled out the documents. My eyes scanned the page. Then stopped. My chest clenched. “Nightshade root,” I read out loud, my voice cold. “And... what the hell is this?” Fred stepped closer. “They broke it down into four components. The dominant one is crushed Nightshade. It’s toxic in high doses, but in small amounts, it causes confusion, fatigue, memory lapses. It also suppresses the wolf.”

“And why wasn’t my coven able to determine that?” “We figured it out together.” Dina lifted both hands as if in surrender. “They were focused on healing a normal shifter wound, which doesn’t have herbs involved. As we discussed the wolf’s struggle right before death, we were able to determine the cause.” She nodded to Chelsea. “Right.” Chelsea bit her bottom lip. “Fortunately, our coven has an antidote for nightshade on hand.” Michael’s brows lifted. “We do?”

Zanthe is properly crotchety after all the hard work she’s had to do to burn it out. They’ve layered in combinations of belladonna, nightshade and a whole host of other poisons. Tiny amounts, nothing that will actually kill me, but enough to mess with my system. Some of them have shoved Zanthe back out of reach for a while, like someone slamming a door in my head, and all of them hurt in one way or another.
