The feature of the valley had been marred heavily by war as it could be seen just by taking a glance around, the same way it was all over the world. Lush forests, long grasses and vegetation as a whole had suffered greatly from the devastating effects of the war which was why finding any form if vegetation outside of the cities of refuge was quite an uphill task. Even climate had suffered

James shook his head. “Not officially.” Lucas stared at him. “Unofficially?” James looked at Xavier. “That's where things become complicated.” Xavier opened another file. “Give me the coordinates.” James did. Xavier entered them. A map appeared. Lucas stared at the location. It was approximately forty kilometers outside Hilton City. Surrounded by forest. No major roads. No registered buildings. Lucas's eyes narrowed. “What did my grandfather call it?” James looked at him. “Safe Haven.”

He stares at me, no warmth, no mercy—only devastation buried beneath fury. Finally, he releases my throat and steps away. I almost collapse onto the wooden floor. He turns back toward Daniel, smiles, and draws the gun again. He cocks the gun. His expression never changes. “I searched the world for my wife, and I found her in your arms.” Daniel’s eyes widen. My blood turns to ice. “No!” I throw myself at him again. “Tristan!” Too late—the gun fires.

The heavy iron gates of Haven were shut tight against the nuclear winter outside. I sat on a thick wool blanket on the concrete floor. My back was pressed hard against a stack of wooden crates.
