The only thing holding me up was the cuffs that cut into my wrists, as my body gave out followed by my mind. I took one last breath and thought of my little flame who I craved time with. One last time, until I succumbed to the desolate void. The stilling of my heart was the last thing I felt as I left the planes of this realm.

"Focus on my breath. Match it." She did. In and out. The air was thick and tasted like wet copper, but the closeness of him—the sheer will of the man—kept the panic at bay. This was the "Slow Burn": the unspoken promise that he would give her his last breath if he had to. "Captain," Jun’s voice broke the moment. He was slumped over the sonar, his face pale and sweaty. "I’ve found it. The Cavern Pocket. The sonar shows a massive dome of air trapped against the ceiling of the trench. It’s... it’s huge."

The last fragment of hope inside me vanished. I was finally, completely done.

Maybe she believed that only in death could there be peace. I opened the bottle cap. “Mom, wait for me.” A soft click sounded. It did not come from the door. It came from the ventilation duct. The villa’s electrical system shut off without warning. The exhaust fan stopped. The lights went out. The bathroom fell into darkness. My hand shook. The bottle almost slipped. Someone was here. Was it Daniel? It seemed impossible. He was in court. Maybe it was a burglar. Or a robber. A sharp female voice cut through the darkness. “If you drink that, Daniel will treat you like an object and keep you forever.”

*** When I woke up, Johan was sitting on the edge of the bed, shirtless and smoking. He heard me move and looked back. A check landed on the bed in front of me. I stared at it. He only said a few words. "I'm bored with you." Something inside me cracked. Like porcelain shattering, sharp pieces cut across my heart. Still, my voice came out calm. I even smiled. "I've got less than three months left. Couldn't you wait a little longer?" Johan frowned. "Yara Yelton, you should know your place."

Nevaeh puts her shoulder under my arm, trying not to hurt me further and begins to usher me to the exit. We stumble through an empty hallway. It’s an arduous task because I can barely hold myself up. My strength is gone. At some point, Nevaeh is dragging and carrying me. The sound of a door opening and the heated feel of daylight against my skin is the last thing I hear or feel before I breathe my last breath and die.
