HIS WILLING TOY
A koi pond sat in the center, the water glinting, and fish darting under lily pads.
“I found this place when I was a kid,” he said, crouching by the edge. “I used to hide here when shit got heavy.”
I knelt beside him, watching the fish shimmer orange and white.
“It’s beautiful.” My voice came out soft and genuine, and I hated it. He handed me a small bag of feed, his fingers brushing mine softly.
“Go on, they’re hungry.”
I tossed a pinch into the water, and the fish swarmed forward in haste. I repeated it again and again until Enzo began to chuckle.
