Traveler's Notebook Tokyo Novels & Stories

Julian's POV She gave me the fourth notebook on a Tuesday. Left it with the doorman in an envelope with my name on it, no note inside. Just the notebook. Dark blue cover, softer than the green one, edges worn from being carried around. I read it in one sitting.

We hadn't talked much since Tokyo—things were complicated between us. "Hey stranger," he said, helping load my bag. "Ready for an adventure?" "As ready as I'll ever be." The drive was actually fun. Ethan had made playlists, Jules brought snacks, and the other studentsâ€"people I vaguely knew from campus—were funny and relaxed. For the first time in weeks, I felt almost normal. Until we stopped for gas and I saw it. A magazine cover, prominently displayed: "MARCUS STEELE AND HANA TANAKA: TOKYO'S NEW POWER COUPLE."

Nothing needed to. Yet something had settled into place. Something firm and unseen. Like a foundation no one remembered building. The traveler woke in a small room above a shop that sold ordinary goods. Fabric. Tools. Paper. Ink. The kind of place that existed for usefulness not beauty. The journal rested on the table beside the bed. It had not moved during the night. It never seemed to. They sat up slowly. No rush. No urgency. Only awareness. The kind that comes after long storms have passed even if the sky is clear now.

In fact, it looks like a journal. June 23rd. Munich. Today I decided to wander down to the market and... I flip forward through the notebook. It's not just a journal, I realize quickly. It's a travelogue. My father was recording stories and thoughts from his travels. I skim through the pages, looking for any reference to London, or to the year in question. And twenty pages from the end, there it is. London. The first couple of pages talk at length about the museums, the food, the galleries. There's no mention of any women. Until I get to this entry:

"Delight in the beauty that surrounds you." -Anonymous- *** On the very last day they had in Tokyo before they moved to Osaka, Stefan emptied his schedule for the day and decided to take Eva around the city. Of course, they used the transport service from the hotel to take them around the city. The distance between one district to the other didn’t matter to them. They visited the Senso Ji temple, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo National Museum and a few other less known places to eat and go shopping.

The clouds had parted, and Tokyo lay spread before the morning sun in gold leaf on asphalt: a promise, or a start, or maybe both. The driver, Kenji, came scrambling into the front seat. I gave him the address I'd received: "Help me find Mr. Yugo—ah, Yuki Roman. Give me his latest address in Tōkyō." Kenji's phone beeped. In fifteen minutes, he nodded, gave me the sheet. "Got it, sir?" "Yes. And. and I want food—lots. Send all of it. Sushi, ramen, wagashi, fruit—send it in a basket. Best quality. Today's for Yuki."

By taking his journal and making it mine, I hoped to allow him to travel through me. The months went by like that. The ink from my pen tracing the paths my feet took me. A café in Lisbon where the sun slanted through stained-glass windows. A market in Marrakech where the spices clung to my skin. A quiet street in Tokyo, where the cherry blossoms powdered my hair like snow. I wrote about all of it. Not only what I saw, but what I felt. How it was odd to wake up in a city where I was not known. How it was odd to feel weightless for the first time in years. And through it all, there was Mike.

The notebook is a cheap spiral-bound thing I bought in a stationery shop in Brooklyn three weeks ago, before I knew what I was packing for. The cover is blue cardboard, already soft at the corners. Inside are eleven days of transcriptions, every deed and manifest and shipping record I have translated, every note I have made in the margins, every photograph reference I have logged. The pages are filled with my handwriting, small and precise, the handwriting of someone who learned early that words left room are words that can be used against you.

She makes funny faces while letting my puppy eat what's on her hand. “Mommy. We will go to Osaka, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Mount Fuji and more right? Then we must try those Capsule Hotels where they have manga everywhere!” I said excitedly while literally counting the places in which our Itinerary was planned. “Books, Books, Books. You only care about books. I also want to see something new, Jacob. Why can't you choose something like a place with instagramable sight or views! Like hotels with enormous chandeliers and good banquets or even beautiful hot springs. where we can RELAXX,” my sister said contradicting my ideas for the inns.

"Man! What a day!" I exclaimed as I walked from work to my home. "Tokyo sure is a hell of a city. Who would have thought that I would have to start working part-time the minute I arrive here?" I thought, feeling exhausted. Well, if there is one thing I learned, it is that you need to start living at your own expense if you want to make yourself at home in Tokyo.
