Steve said grimly, “Sterling Creek will starve. And death will follow.”
They pressed on, moving with purpose until they reached a hidden clearing cloaked in shadows. Sunlight barely filtered through the thick canopy above. There, at the center, stood an impossibly ancient tree—wide, towering, and pulsing with unseen energy. Its bark was dark and cracked like burned skin, and its roots twisted deep into the ground like the fingers of a dying god clutching the earth.
At the base of the tree was a horrific sight: a pile of skulls, thirteen in total, stacked in a grotesque pyramid. Emma and Steve recognized them at once.
