THE BREAKING POINT—1 ~ANYA POV~ The toy was ridiculous. Not just expensive, which it obviously was based on the designer packaging and the fact that it had been delivered by a man in a suit instead of a normal delivery driver. But completely over the top—a remote-controlled dinosaur that was almost as big as Marcello, with realistic movements and sounds and probably more technology than my first car. Marcello was losing his mind over it in the living room, making the dinosaur roar and chase him around the furniture while he shrieked with joy.

To keep my company, Ace began telling me a story from his childhood days. “My brothers and I shared everything together growing up. When I meant everything, I meant EVERYTHING possible. But all that changed when my dad got us this toy, a little fire truck. It was from the werewolf world, so it was our treasure. She had changed into a soft, friendly-looking sweater and carried a small bag containing candy and a new toy truck. “Hi, Hayes,” she said gently, kneeling down to his level with a warm smile. “What are you playing?” Hayes looked up cautiously. Moe didn’t slow until we were at the truck. Moe pulled the Corolla to a stop beside the hulking, armored truck that had been our primary transport until its engine had given out. The contrast was almost comical. The truck was a beast of burden, a brute-force solution to a brute-force world. The Corolla was a pathetic, shivering mouse hiding in its shadow.

He looks at me like I just asked the stupidest question ever and I arch a brow at him. "What?" "We have to go to the toy store." He says matter-of-factly with a small frown and I nod my head slowly. "Ah, yes. Of course. Ask a silly question." Inside the toy store, he makes his way straight towards the spaceship aisle like his life depends on it. I follow him slowly, pulling a shopping basket behind me. He holds up a huge spaceship toy. “MOM. Look. This one has hyperdrive AND an alien map!” He says excitedly and I arch my brow at him again.

Its back slowly opened and a cascade of helium balloons in shades of 'pink, sky blue, gold, and pearl white' rose into the air. Gasps echoed. Mouths fell open. Inside the truck, shelves displayed lavish gifts—a beautiful Barbie Dreamhouse Castle, rows of Transformers action figures and battle helmets for the boys, three mini electric cars in pink, red, and navy blue, perfectly sized for them. There were also plush animals as big as a couch, miniature aircraft model kits, easels with watercolor palettes, personalized storybooks with gilded spines, and art supplies bundled with ribbons. Then a banner read ‘With love, from Daddy!'.
