Kane fell asleep as soon as he got into the car. After leaving the cafe, Regina asked Atlas to take them to Kingston Toys, a mall store that only sold a very complete and very large selection of toys. Kane seemed hesitant and refused several times when Regina asked him to pick any toy he liked as a birthday present. But Regina said she would be sad if Kane refused. So, Kane finally agreed and ran from aisle to aisle, choosing toys. He picked up a brick-built model of a Japanese city and a complex-looking wooden fighter plane.

"Mr. Cosby, you're just in time! Harriet only won a plushie, yet she's insisting she won the grand prize and is making a fuss. You have to back me up!" I stared at Vincent coldly. "Mr. Cosby, you owe me an explanation." If he were willing to admit he no longer loved me, I would be willing to end things on good terms. Vincent looked at me, took a deep breath, and said calmly, "Harriet, I know you've been working here for years, and you're upset about not winning the grand prize. I can compensate you later, but I won't let you take Katie's prize."

Bumblebee!” He grinned widely, completely excited, completely unaware. My eyes lingered on the toy for a second. Then slowly… lifted. “A big uncle…” I repeated again, quieter this time.

Next to him sat his friend, Archie, who was busily trying to build a giant wall out of plastic buckets. Toby held a small red toy truck, rolling it over the edge of the sandbox. “Vroom, vroom," Toby made low engine noises with his mouth, pushing the truck up a pile of dirt. "Look, Archie! My monster truck is climbing the big mountain!" Archie didn't look up, smashing a plastic bucket down onto the sand. "My castle is bigger. It’s for the dinosaurs." "Trucks can smash dinosaurs," Toby declared proudly, making his truck jump through the air and land right next to Archie’s feet.

“I’m afraid that you’d turn the party into a shitshow if I let you push through with your plans.” Dalton got down on his knees and started wiping his fake tears. Karina laughed at his antics. Dalton looked up to them with fiery eyes. “I don’t care what Kairo says! I’m going to tell you my plan, and none of you are stopping me.” Thinking that it’d be better to let Dalton let his feelings out, the gang looked at him with curiosity. “Okay, so hear this! We’re going to set up a really big rocket in the forest,” he started off.

The poor kid was standing there wearing it while they launched actual basketballs into it. And every time they scored, they sprinted around celebrating like they’d won a national championship. The freshman looked one missed shot away from crying. “See?” Maeve said. I laughed despite myself, my eyes shifting on their own. Tyler was laughing now. His lips pulled in that controlled way that barely made sounds slip through, but enough to expose his teeth.
