The way Hunter’s curious gaze felt on me, those ice-blue eyes that seemed to pierce right through to my soul had made my heart felt as if it was on still. It took everything in me not to crumble under his stare. I knew I had to look him in the eyes to sell my story, to make him believe that I was being sincere. That was when I had to stare back. But it was so hard—harder than I’d imagined. A shiver ran down my spine just thinking about how close I came to breaking.

Tears began to play around his eyes while telling me the story. “A huge truck lost its brakes, and of all of the people, Celeste was the one who got involved.” His jaw clenched. There was firmness from his voice when he mentioned that. I decided to look away. I felt my tears playing around my eyes as well. “Do you still love her?” I asked instead. He did not dare to look at Crystal because he knew that he could not deceive her. Crystal leaned forward and forced Eric to look her in the eyes. Eric squirmed and tried to look away, but she wouldn’t allow it. Finally, Eric admitted defeat. He allowed her to look into his eyes, and when she did, two things happened. First: Crystal came to know the truth about Eric’s condition; second: Eric realized why Crystal looked familiar and why he hadn’t recognized her straight away. She turned about to spit fire at him for his carelessness but his obsidian pair of eyes paralyze her body. They bore pain so intense, it lures her into taking half of it to alleviate his suffering...

I sink into it. Bobby joins me. "That's it." I nod. "Yep." "You expect me to believe that?" He crosses his arms. I roll my head to him. "It's the truth, Bobby." He studies my face. "I still think your hiding something." I shrug him off. I didn't lie totally. I did find her. She was the one who jumped me, but the case is definitely not closed. Not by a long shot.

I mutter quietly. “What might, the wolves?” “Death.” “Death? Now I am curious.” He pulls the car over and turns to look at me. His bright blue eyes quickly scan over my body. “If I tell you the truth. Promise me you won’t freak out.” “Why do I not like where this is going?” “Just promise and I will promise that I won’t hurt you.” “Okay, spill it.” I lift the sunglasses, showing him my purple eyes. He stares straight at them, but doesn’t say anything. Just nods.

"Yeah, I saw how you dealt with that yourself." She looked away from him and said softly, "I told you I'd try not to do that again." "And you never lie?" he asked, skepticism clear in his voice. She looked him in the eye and said, "Never." He held her gaze for a long, uncomfortable moment. She refused to break eye contact. She knew it didn't really mean anything. Anyone could profess to tell the truth and look a person in the eye. It was a stupid myth that people thought they could get away with a lie if they looked a person in the eye. But somehow, when his dark scrutiny swept over her and finally captured her eyes with his, she knew he could discern truth from lie.
