"Keep... moving," Julian rasped, his voice a strangled, breathless whisper. His eyes were closed, his jaw locked so tight she could hear his teeth grinding. "The... the surge is dampening. We must... clear the shaft."
"You can't climb with one hand," she pleaded, tears stinging her eyes. "Let me help you."
"You cannot carry my weight, Clara," he said, slowly opening his eyes. They were bloodshot, dark with a terrifying, quiet fury at his own physical limitations. "But I can carry my own. Keep moving. That is an order."
