I powered through all of 'Twisted Loyalties' over the weekend, and the ending definitely leans into the unresolved side of things. The core 'betrayal' plot gets a sort of conclusion—you find out who did the big double-cross and why—but it’s immediately overshadowed by the fallout. The last few pages introduce a whole new threat from a rival faction that we’ve only heard about in rumors, and the book ends with the main character getting a phone call that makes her go completely pale. It’s less of a traditional cliffhanger and more of a hard pivot toward the next conflict, leaving all the emotional threads from the main story totally frayed. The protagonist’s relationship with her maybe-redeemed ally is in this horrible, ambiguous place, and we don’t get any internal monologue to clarify it.

If you go in expecting every single thread to be neatly tied off, you’ll be frustrated. It feels like the first act of a larger story rather than a standalone novel with a proper epilogue. Personally, I don’t mind it because I’m already invested in the characters, but I can see why some readers felt a bit cheated. The final line is literally just her whispering, 'It’s him,' before cutting to black. So, yeah, very much designed to make you grab the next book immediately.

Okay, the twist in 'Twisted Loyalties'? It's that the protagonist's mentor figure, the one who pulled them out of the gutter and taught them everything, was actually the mastermind behind the antagonist syndicate the whole time. The 'rescue' was a long con to plant a deeply loyal asset. It sounds obvious when you say it out loud, but the execution is what sells it. The book spends so much time building up this incredibly warm, fatherly dynamic; you see the protagonist's absolute devotion, making those little sacrifices for the 'greater good' the mentor outlines.

Then, in the third act, when the protagonist uncovers a financial trail, the pieces click with this horrible, quiet dread instead of a big action reveal. The mentor doesn't even deny it—he just smiles and asks if the lesson wasn't valuable. That chilling pragmatism reframes the entire first half of the book. Every act of kindness becomes a manipulation, and the protagonist's entire identity as a hero is just a role they were cast in.

Honestly, Finn and Talia dominate the whole thing for me. Finn is the main guy, the kind of grifter who talks his way into and out of everything, always with this bruised moral compass. He's allied with Talia, the brains of the operation, a hacker who doesn't just see code but sees the whole system's weak points. Their partnership is the core—it's messy, built on necessity and this fragile trust.

Then you've got Silas Vane, the old-school crime boss who treats loyalty like a religion, except when it comes to his own son, Kieran. That father-son tension is a whole other battlefield; Kieran is trying to prove himself by any means, which puts him in this weird spot where he's sometimes aligning with Finn against his own father's interests. Lena, Silas's lieutenant, is the wild card. She's fiercely protective of the organization but has her own history with Talia that complicates everything. Most of the 'twisted loyalties' really play out in how these five orbit each other, shifting from temporary truces to outright betrayal depending on the chapter.

The ending with Lena's choice still leaves me wondering who she was truly loyal to all along.
