When I reflected, I saw the same brown eyes as ever, though now with narrow bands of gold round the pupils. Not the unnatural radiance of Echo, but something more genial. More real. I was whispering, "She is trying to come back." The Vault gave a jerk about us.

The man who now owned her by blood and bond. Fury surged. She wanted to drive her forehead into his and never stop, but her limbs refused every command. His eyes flashed that cold, steely blue—another of the twins’ unnatural holds locking her in place. Her mouth, however, remained free. She spat the last of the blood across his face. They clearing went utterly still. Shock rippled through the crowd. For one frozen second even Kaela felt the weight of what she had done. This might not end as a claiming. It might end as an execution.

She spun and ran. Inside, Dorian and Kai had just reached Elias when Kairis burst in, panting. “It’s The Eye.” Lucian’s head snapped toward her. “What?” Kairis’s voice was grim. “The Eye… He’s been unsealed.” “The Eye of What?” Dorian frowned, confused. “Some ancient relic? A weapon?” Kairis shook her head. “No. Not a weapon. Not a being. The Eye was a god. A brutal, sadistic god. Not even bound by any order—neither Void nor Light. He devoured realms for sport. He watched creation burn and called it beauty.”

I had to prove to myself that I could be a warrior, just like I always wanted. Sara gave me her usual malicious smirk. Goddess, she made Tyce’s alpha face look like a child’s imitation. She exuded pure evil, especially with her coal black eyes, which looked even more ominous lit up by her night vision. It was downright terrifying. I’m pretty sure she was enjoying every second of torturing me.

Damian stared deeply at Enola, this time without a cynical smile. Enola got up from the sofa and walked gracefully towards Damian. Her gaze was sharp, but her smile was sweet. “And you like dangerous women, don’t you, Mr. Tyrant?” Enola arrived in front of Damian, and he pulled her waist closer until the distance between them disappeared. “Be careful, Enola. The fire you light could burn you.” Damian chuckled, but his eyes sharpened. Enola leaned her face forward as if to kiss Damian, but she quickly moved to Damian’s ear.
