Just anything to get the thoughts of my uncle out of my head. I flipped the next page of my textbook open. My phone rang. I ignored it. I continued reading. It kept buzzing with texts, when I had had enough, I angrily picked it up. Turns out all the texts were from one person — Jared. ‘Aurora, I am at your house.’ ‘Please open up the gate.’ ‘I know your uncle isn't home, I kept tabs on him.’ ‘It's fine if you don't want me to come in, we could go somewhere.’

"Sofia. Daddy is here. Can you talk to your mom for me? Tell her not to do this. I do not want a divorce." Leonardo thought Sofia would soften. Sofia used to be the one who ran to Leonardo every time Leonardo came home, wrapping her arms around Leonardo's legs, calling "Daddy" over and over. But this time, Sofia just stepped half a pace behind me. Quietly, Sofia said, "Uncle Leonardo, you should go take care of your other kid. Do not bother me and my mom anymore." Leonardo went rigid. Leonardo's hand hung in the air. "Sofia, I am your daddy. Why are you calling me uncle?"

“And why were you closing the door in the first place?” “I– I was–“ Benjamin stuttered, unable to finish his sentence. “Chasing out my visitor?” “No, uncle.” He said through gritted teeth. “I already invited her in. I was going to bring her upstairs before you came down.” I held back a laugh. This was cinematic. It deserved its own book. Ben was trying his hardest not to show how angry he was but it was pretty obvious. Saint just didn’t care. The two men were only ten years apart. It made me wonder how much respect Ben had for his uncle for him to tolerate dating his ex in front of him.

The moment my eyes met purple ones, we both knew and had a mutual understanding about how we had messed up. “Aria, this is your father's brother, your older uncle, you can call him Uncle Ronald.” Oblivious to the tension between us, Mrs.Laura said.

Steve explained. "But we know Mr. Ian has been missing for years. He’s presumed dead, so it rightfully belongs to Mr. Shadrach now," Mr. Wilson intervened. "But we’ve found Ian. He’s no longer missing or presumed dead," Steve responded, his words shocking me. I couldn’t believe it. I was both stunned and excited. If they truly had found Ian, I wanted to know everything about him. And even if it turned out to be some kind of game, at least my uncles would make things easier for me. It was a win-win.

He answered and looked at Chase. "Take good care of her." He whispered then walked to Whitney and Uncle. "We will be in touch soon okay." He said as Uncle nodded. He turned and looked at Lee and Jeannie. "Thank you." He whispered as I chuckled softly. It was hard to believe but Ian was now a different person with more understanding and compassion.

There was silence now, and I presumed I had the floor now to say what I wanted. "You're done talking, right? Old or not, your uncle looks way way better than you or your father can ever imagine, Daniel. So don't get all bogie about yourself." I chuckled. "You know, you are actually a nobody without my wealth. Your dad has nothing apart from being a lapdog for your grandfather. And to talk about your uncle who you address as old, he has everything, everything you will never be able to have on your own Daniel." I paused and could see the defeated look on Daniel's face.

When she gave him a small nod, he took the candy and chirped politely, “Thank you, sir.” Nora pressed her lips together. “What brings you here, Ian?” He straightened and gestured toward the boy beside him. “I came with my nephew. He begged me to tag along, and well… What can I say? Uncle duty.” He chuckled. “Didn’t expect to bump into you though. Seems this event’s got a bit of destiny to it.”

He was the one person I could count on when things got worse with me. He was the only one who had my back and now no one does. Not even my own bloody mother. My mum cleared her throat, drawing my attention to her. She reduces her voice to a fake motherly voice, soft, warm and unfamiliar. “Eric I know it is hard for you to take in but your uncle and his son mean well. I mean, your dad was the one who drove them after you made baseless accusations against him and even at that he still wants to help. Be a good boy”

He wasn’t the man everyone feared, he was someone’s nephew, someone’s son. Someone who apparently got suspended from school for punching people. The image felt impossible to picture. Then another relative spoke. “At least he smiled back then.” They chuckled and for the first time all evening, I actually relaxed. Then one sentence destroyed it. “So…” Aunt Margaret lifted her wine glass. “Has anyone heard from Victoria lately?” The change was immediate, the laughter vanished. Enough for the room to feel different. I looked up from my plate and noticed several people suddenly became very interested in their food. My attention shifted toward Adrian.
