Five Years Later…
Five years, apparently, could change a lot about a burned forest.
There was still a long way to go, of course. The oak we’d planted at Elena’s grave barely came up to Nora’s hip, which Ellie had informed us this morning was technically called a sapling and not a tree, and Nora had promptly informed her little sister that she was being a know-it-all, to which Ellie stuck out her tongue.
But the rest of it had come back. Slowly, stubbornly, and at their own pace. The undergrowth had returned first, then the smaller trees, then the birds, and this spring the canopy had finally been thick enough in a few places to cast some shade, although not much.
