The Unseen had heard them. And they were coming. The air crackled with something unnatural—an energy that didn’t belong to this world. It was a picture of a pregnant woman, trying to cater for an infant child, at the same time sell her wares in a very busy market, the surrounding elements were people seemingly just going about their daily activities without even sparing her a glance, the woman in the picture looked absolutely desolate, she looked like she could give up on life any minute, she looked unkempt and unhappy, but there was a spark of another emotion in her eyes, an emotion Matilda knew too well, it was hope.

A clean, contained thing. I looked at the boy arranging marshmallows into a pattern only he understood. I looked at the man sitting quietly across from me, one thumb tracing the rim of his mug. I took a sip of the hot chocolate, warm and slightly too sweet and exactly right, and understood, for the first time since stepping off that plane, that the thing I had been escaping toward had already shifted into something I hadn't planned for at all. I wasn't sure yet whether that was frightening or the opposite of it.
