1. The Rift Opens The rift pulsed like a second sun over the Western Reach. Ava stood at its edge, armored in midnight threads enchanted by Darius himself. Kael adjusted the shield rune on her spine, while Rowan watched the portal with narrowed eyes. “I don’t trust it,” Rowan said. “It’s not just a hole. It’s a trap.” Kael agreed. “It’s too stable. Rifts this size don’t hold unless something is holding them.”

Eli pressed against my side, and we stood together watching empty air where a rift used to be. “Darius, you need to rest,” Thomas said gently. “You’ve been standing here for…” “I’m not leaving.” My voice was rough from disuse and barely contained panic. “What if the rift opens and I’m not here?
