Oh man, vampire knight, vol. 1 was one of my first forays into that whole gothic shoujo scene. Legally reading it now is a bit of a mixed bag depending on where you are. For a long time, Viz Media had it up on their digital storefront, and you can still buy it as an ebook on places like Amazon Kindle, Google Play Books, or Rakuten Kobo. That's the most straightforward route.

Sometimes I wish there was a simple subscription service that had all the back catalog stuff, but the older titles tend to get cycled out. I'd start by checking the Viz Media website directly to see if they list it for purchase; they're the official English publisher. It's not typically included in the Shonen Jump or VIZ Manga app subscriptions, which is a shame because it would be perfect for that.

So, I'm coming at this as someone who read the whole series way after it was popular, and honestly? Volume 1 feels like a very specific taste. It's got that super early-2000s shojo aesthetic, which I have a weird nostalgia for, but the pacing is glacial. You spend a lot of time in the moonlit academy setting, and the main love triangle between Yuki, Kaname, and Zero is introduced with this intense, brooding atmosphere that can feel a bit over-the-top now.

I think whether it's 'worth it' depends on what you're looking for. If you want a fast-paced vampire action story, you'll probably be bored. But if you're into that particular brand of dramatic, gothic romance with a lot of lingering stares and tragic backstories hinted at, it's kind of a classic of the genre. The art is gorgeous, though, and Matsuri Hino's detailed costumes and settings are a big part of the appeal. I kept reading mostly for the art and to see where the wild plot eventually went, but the first volume alone is a bit of a slow appetizer.

So I finally reread 'Vampire Knight, Vol. 1' after years away from it, and it’s striking how much groundwork gets laid in just that first book.

Right off the bat, you’ve got this whole 'guardian of day class' setup with Yuki and Zero. It seems like a simple school romance at first, but the tension between the human day class and the secret vampire night class is just simmering. The art does a lot of heavy lifting, especially in the way Kaname is framed—always so distant and perfect, but you can tell there’s something deeply off about the whole situation.

What really sets up the conflict, though, isn’t just the vampire vs. human thing. It’s Yuki’s forgotten past and Zero’s seething hatred. That scene where Zero points his gun at Kaname in the moonlight? That’s the series in a nutshell. You know a massive betrayal is coming; you just don’t know from which direction. It all feels very fragile, like the school’s peace is a piece of glass waiting to be shattered.

The volume ends with more questions than answers, which is probably why I kept buying them as a teen. You’re left wondering who Yuki really is and why Kaname seems to already know.
