I'm waiting once again, for the last time. Tonight determines what my future will hold. I'm finally doing it, I've been silent for so long, watching things unfold in front of my eyes and remain in the background. I'm a woman in love and I'm about to express all that's been within. I wanted things to be perfect and so I had some help from Joey, Mrs Davies and Alex, who would be informing us on their arrival. But the new shine didn’t fool me. Her eyes still found me in the crowd like heat-seeking missiles, and each glare carried enough venom to melt the heels right off my shoes. I counted at least six in the last minute. The music had died down now to a slow R&B and only uncle Jace seemed to be grooving, swaying his hips in blissful ignorance. Everybody was still expecting the other shoe to drop and frankly, I was too. While they were hanging back, pretending to mingle while their ears stayed tuned for the next explosion, I was the one looking over my shoulder in case she sent a flying shoe my way.

Buckets and buckets of water would relentlessly fall from the sky for long periods of time before it would all be over for the year. Right now she would have done anything for that weather. Her thin flats were repeatedly sucked into the mud covering the street. It took a considerable amount of effort to lift and move her feet forward, but she did so relentlessly. Brooklyn quickened her steps, barely clinging onto her flats as they suctioned into the thick mud. Her flat slipped from her foot and she had to stop and dig it out of the mud pile before continuing. She gave up on replacing her shoes and just held them in her hand the rest of the way.

Pretend everything was fine and wait for the next shoe to drop. Because that was all I could do. Wait. Hope and pray that whoever had that video would show mercy. Even though I knew better than to expect mercy from anyone.

All I could think was that the sooner we got this meeting over with, the sooner I got to take this damned garment off. "Don’t forget the shoes!" Angela gasps as I yank open my bedroom door.
