Walt Disney Dinosaur Book Novels & Stories

Inside are children's books about dinosaurs, gorgeous hardcover editions with detailed illustrations. There's a note on top in handwriting I recognize now. "For Julian's collection, and for you, some peace." Underneath the dinosaur books is another book, slim and elegant, poetry about resilience and finding yourself. My hands shake as I open it and see an inscription on the inside cover in Marcus's careful script. Elena, you are not lost, you are not broken, you are becoming, and becoming is the bravest thing anyone can do, keep going. I read it three times, something in my chest cracking open, not breaking but opening like a door.

I ask her and she quickly regains her confidence. "I wanna tell you about dinosaurs, then we can play with them," she beams and grabs my hand. I stand up before she begins to take me to the table. She hands me the T-Rex, Ashlynn gets one with a long neck, and Lily takes one that has spikes on its back. "The T-Rex is the meanest dinosaur. He's like the king!" "What do I have?" Ashlynn asks. "That's a brachiosaurus, they eat plants and stuff. They didn't eat meat," Lily says. "Mines a stegosaurus and he eats plants too. His spikes are used to protect him."

He came out later to look at what I was doing after Mandy left. "Doing some decorating?" he asked. "Yep! Trying to decide what theme I should choose for the baby room," I said and furrowed my brows. "I like dinosaurs," he declared. "Huh? Dinosaurs? I guess that sounds kind of cute..." "Did you know, Sauropods were the tallest animals ever lived? They were taller than giraffes," he interrupted me. "Um...Nerd!" I scoffed. "But I like the idea," I said.

Almost bedtime. As I step out of my office, I hear giggles from the living room. When I turn the corner, I find Collin sprawled out on the floor, surrounded by dinosaur figurines, his T-Rex plush clutched in one hand. His face lights up the second he sees me. “Daddy! Come look!” He waves me over excitedly, pointing at the Jurassic World book spread open in front of him. “Did you know the Brachiosaurus was as big as a house?”

Sounds like a date, babe. I typed a reply when Max and Pascha's voices came from behind me. They were still busy with their new dinosaur, arguing about the species, whether it was a Tyrannosaurus Rex or an Allosaurus. “Daddy, I have a book about dinosaurs! Let me show you something!” Max jumped up from the floor and ran into his toy room, leaving Pascha chuckling and shaking his head. I put the phone on my chest, exhaling. I let Pascha be silent. I lay on my side, still chatting with Aurora and Kyara.

"No. More book. Elephant book." "We already read the elephant book. Twice." She considered this. "Cat book?" "We read the cat book too." "Bella pick." She climbed off my lap, went to her bookshelf, returned with a book about dinosaurs we'd never read before. "This one?" I asked. "Bella pick. Dino book." We read the dinosaur book. She listened intently, pointed at each dinosaur, attempted to pronounce their names. "T-Rex," I said. "Rex," she repeated clearly.

"And climbing. And running. And talking." "She talks a LOT," Rowan added. "And what about you, Rowan? What do you like?" "Books. And building things. And dinosaurs." "Dinosaurs are very cool." "Do you like dinosaurs?" Rowan asked, interest sparking in his eyes. "I do. When I was your age, I had a whole collection of toy dinosaurs." "Really? What was your favorite?" "The T-Rex. Because it was big and powerful." "Mine too!" Rowan smiled. The first real smile.

“You would’ve been a great Dino.” “The pet? Really?” Dawn cocks a hand on her hip and looks at him with mock disdain. “That’s telling of some Freudian problem.” We all laugh and continue on into the party. Even the security guards are dressed up, and it looks like the best day at Disney World, a kid could dream of. There's more cartoon characters, more monsters, more everything, than I thought would even be possible to fit into the room. There’s a dragon strapped to the roof blowing smoke,

It was filthy and sacred all at once. Afterward, bath time turned into a splash war—Lila in her bubble-filled tub, Dante and I on the floor beside it, him rolling up his sleeves to help wash her curls while I read from her favorite dinosaur book. “And the velociraptor was clever and fast, just like Sage will be,” I narrated, voice soft. Lila’s eyes sparkled. “Or Rowan the strong one, like Daddy!” When she was finally tucked in, dinosaur nightlight casting shadows on the walls, Dante and I lingered in her doorway. She reached for both our hands. “Night, Mommy. Night, Daddy. Love you bigger than a T-Rex.”

“Thank you.” They stood like that for a long moment, until Emma called from inside. “Keira! Come see!” They pulled apart, and Keira followed the sound of Emma’s voice to a room painted pale yellow, with a bed shaped like a castle and shelves overflowing with books and toys. Emma was kneeling on the floor, a large picture book open in front of her. “This is my favorite,” she said, pointing to a detailed illustration of a brachiosaurus. “He has the longest neck of all. Even longer than Grandma’s.”
