That dead crow on my pillow and the whistle in the dark still haunted me. The pack gathered in the clearing near the tree line. Warriors stood tall in their dark gear, trackers checked their weapons, and support wolves shifted nervously on four paws. Damon was already at the front, barking orders in that low, ruthless voice of his. His broad shoulders filled out his black jacket, and his dark hair looked messy from the wind. His eyes found me across the crowd for just a second. They narrowed. I lifted my chin and stared right back. He turned away and kept talking to the lead tracker.

The flickering flames threw restless light across the room, casting long, shifting silhouettes of the warriors standing like statues at the edges. At the far end, upon a throne carved from blackened oak and adorned with silver wolf motifs, sat Alpha Damian. His long, midnight hair framed a face of sharp angles and dark, unwavering eyes. The tailored black coat he wore blended seamlessly with the gloom, making him seem like part of the night itself—an immovable shadow made flesh.

I could see the triumph in his eyes, the pleasure he took in orchestrating this parade of lies. Like the first ones, the warriors went to the barracks and Oliver and Antony, as well as beta Reed, were taken to their respective rooms. Drake and Maryanne of the Night Shadows Pack were the third to arrive. Only 25 warriors came with them.
