The corridor outside erupted into sudden chaos, shouts and the sound of a struggle carrying clearly through the thin walls, and then, abruptly, silence.
The door swung open slowly.
Caleb stood in the threshold, his formal attire torn and disheveled, blood streaked across one side of his face, his eyes wild with something that had finally cracked entirely beyond his usual careful composure.
"Elena," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "I've spent three years believing you were dead. It seems I owe you an apology for underestimating exactly how hard you'd fight to survive."
"Caleb," Lucien said, stepping fully between us. "This ends now."
