We hovered, side by side, at the pooling light in front of the truck. In the middle of the road there was a bird. Rowan gasped. I hadn’t realised that she – and Kathrena – had both come outside, as well. I’d assumed that they would have both stayed in the truck. Kathrena flinched at the sight of the wounded bird, its wing curled back. There was dried blood across its black feathers, spoiling the oil spill plumage. One open eye was turned toward us, black and beady and forever unseeing.

I sighed, feeling my heart bleed inside as I thought of the trauma this was going to give my boys. I hated that I had to take them with me on this risky adventure but they were important tools if we wanted to save their father.

"Wheee-aw!, wheee-aw!!, whee-aw!!!," it makes a consistent sound nonstop.

Men from the massive truck unloaded empty cages from the back and stacked them near the basin. Two men cornered Rolf, who managed to break through a gap between two of the utes, sprinting off as quick as he could. I tried to look for a place to go, but my body was battered. My broken arm had two bullets lodged in it now, and one of my fingertips had been blown off. I could see the broken bone underneath surfacing from under the stream of blood that soaked my fur. Soon the numbers were falling. I saw something huge leap on the back of one of the great birds. Tearing its head to the side and forcing it to the ground. It collapsed. Its wings splayed over the ground and folded against the trees like fallen sails. I was strangely heartbroken to see such a powerful thing so broken. Dead. I mentally corrected. I felt ripping of my skin and realized I was being torn apart. I twisted, thinking that the birds were raking me. Or that one of the monsters got through.

“Are you hurt?” The bird tried to get out of my palm, but it fell back. I was right, and it had a broken wing. I saw a woman’s reflection in those dark eyes that had me gasping and wondering who it was. The woman was older than me, but I had the same eyes as hers. I almost dropped the little helpless bird. “I’m sorry. I wish I could help, little birdie.” I ran my finger on the broken wing until it sparkled and it magically healed. “Wow. What just happened?” My eyes widened.

" He had intended it to be a yell, a war cry. But it came out as a hoarse, pathetic croak. All the maid fell and began to crawl towards the bird. "We will die together, hinder," Dave whispered. He crawled closer and closer, every struggle. Still, the birds didn't move. They could feel the heat of the sun beating on them, sucking the last moisture from their skin. They had stopped sweating a long time ago. A bad sign. But it didn't matter. We are going to take this bird with us. They all saw an abandoned cart from afar. "It seemed the birds are no more flying. There should be something we can take." One of the other guards said.
