I don’t want you to be in the way of the decorators,” I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “I was just getting some water,”. “Well, hurry up and get back to your room. I don’t want you touching anything or ruining something. By the way, I was just telling Vanessa about her birthday party tomorrow, here at the pack house,”. Vanessa smirked, tossing her perfect hair over her shoulder. “It’s going to be amazing. Everyone who’s anyone will be there,”. I stood frozen, suddenly feeling like an intruder. “Oh,” I managed to say. “That sounds … nice,”.

At least, I thought I was. Or maybe I just wanted to be left alone long enough to convince myself that I was. The dorm was unusually quiet for a Saturday morning. Most people were either sleeping in or already making plans for the weekend. The sunlight filtered through the windows and stretched across the floor. It should have been peaceful. Instead, Vanessa paced the room like a nervous mother waiting outside an operating theater. "Ryker," she said suddenly. "Hm?" "It's Saturday." I looked up from the book I wasn't actually reading.

“You still remember how they treated you?” Another pause. Then Evelyn’s voice dropped. “What are you trying to say?” Vanessa smiled. “Let’s just say I have a little… situation. And you’re the perfect person to handle it for me.” “I don’t work for anyone anymore,” Evelyn said quickly. “Oh, I’m not asking you to,” Vanessa said smoothly. “Think of it as… setting things right.” Evelyn’s voice grew quieter. “What do you want me to do?” Vanessa’s smirk turned darker. “Let’s meet tomorrow. The café near the old plaza 10 a.m. I’ll explain everything.”

It was the smile of a man who knew exactly what he was doing to her. Desperate to redirect, Elena turned to Vanessa. “So. How long are you staying?” Vanessa grinned. “Long enough to stir trouble, short enough to avoid being deported.” She wiggled her brows. “And, speaking of stirring trouble—I have plans for tomorrow.” Elena narrowed her eyes. “Plans?”

And tomorrow night at 11 PM, at the old Vertin warehouse, Vanessa would walk straight toward the truth or straight into the one trap neither of them saw coming.
