Then, like a storm cloud gathering, his expression hardened, armor snapping back into place.
“I can’t sleep,” he muttered, sitting up. His voice was gravelly, roughened by exhaustion and something darker.
Amara pushed herself up on her elbows. “You’ve barely rested in days. You need sleep, Liam.”
“I don’t need sleep,” he snapped, the edge in his voice sharper than he intended. Immediately, regret softened his expression, and his shoulders sank. “I need justice.”
The word hung between them like a blade, suspended and dangerous.
Amara reached for his hand, gently uncurling his tight fist. “Justice and vengeance aren’t the same thing.”
