My bottom lip wobbled pitifully, in an attempt to stave away the unshed tears brimming up in my eyes, but it was only a matter of time before it flooded out and came pouring down like a dam. And it did. Fat blobs of tears dropped down from my eyes onto my dress, before I could even process it. My vision turned blurry and my eyes felt hot and heavy. In a matter of minutes, I broke out into a loud and heart-wrenching sob.

Every moment spent with him was a treasure, and she felt his love wrapping around her like a soft blanket, comforting and secure. Overwhelmed by the depth of her feelings, tears began to well in her eyes. She blinked rapidly, trying to hold them back, but it was no use. Upon feeling his warm touch on my hand, I glanced down to see him wrapping his hand on mine. Slowly I dragged my eyes up past his muscled arm to his shoulder and up until my eyes locked with his rich chocolaty eyes. “There is a well-established neural connection between the lacrimal gland and the brain limbic system associated with emotion. Stifling your body’s need to cry in an emotionally difficult situation is unhealthy, Xyrra.”

I slowly lifted my head, looking up at him. His hand shook as he stroked my hair back from my face and his face softened into exquisite tenderness as he ran the pad of his thumb under my eye, collecting the trail left by my tears. “You cry a lot, at the moment,” he whispered. “Your eyes are often bloodshot and swollen by tears. I saw you… crying at the river, last night… Do you cry because… of me?” I swallowed thickly. That rustle of stones falling down the bank had been Aien and not a river creature wandering in the night. “Not always,” I said honestly. “But often.”

She reached for my arm, gently pushing up the sleeve of my shirt to reveal the large bandage wrapped around my elbow. She studied it intently before checking my other arm, finding a similar bandage. The white gauze was stained with a mixture of blood and antiseptic solution, stark against my skin. Her amber eyes welled with tears, her eyelids slowly reddening as she bit her lip. A single tear escaped, rolling down her cheek and landing on my arm—hot and searing against my skin. I stiffened, uncomfortable with her reaction. "Why are you crying? There's no need for that."

Despite having no romantic feelings for Clyde, the hurt I experienced was real and piercing. As I stood there, lost in a haze of my own thoughts, I didn't realize that my emotions were manifesting physically.
