Liam crossed the room in two quick strides, his hands reaching for hers, but she stepped back, out of his reach.
“You are not a pawn,” he said fiercely. “You’re my wife, Izzy. You’re the person I wake up thinking about every day, the person I—” He stopped himself, running a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. “Yes, our marriage started as a contract. But that’s not what it is anymore. You know that. You have to know that.”
“I thought I did,” she said quietly, her voice trembling. “But now I don’t know what to think. Did you even love me, Liam? Or was it all just part of the deal?”
