The ride back from the event didn’t end with words.

It ended with silence that said too much.

Elena stepped into the penthouse ahead of him, dropping her clutch on the table a little harder than necessary. The tension from the car hadn’t eased. If anything, it had followed them inside, thicker now, harder to ignore.

“You don’t get to do that,” she said, turning to face him.

Adrian loosened his tie slowly, like her tone didn’t touch him at all. “Do what?”

“Act like I embarrassed you for talking to someone when you were the one who left me standing there like I didn’t exist.”

His gaze lifted to hers, calm but sharp. “You knew the rules.”

“And you forgot your part in them,” she said, quieter now, more controlled. “You’re supposed to make it look like I matter.”

A pause.

Not long. But enough.

Adrian stepped closer, stopping just in front of her, his presence controlled but heavier now. “You’re there because of me,” he said quietly. “Don’t mistake that.”

Elena held his gaze, but this time she didn’t push further. She just nodded once, like she understood exactly what that meant.

That was smarter.

Adrian watched her for a second longer than necessary before stepping back again.

“This ends the moment you forget your place again,” he said.

She didn’t argue.

Didn’t react.

That caught his attention more than if she had.

Adrian turned away first. “Be ready tomorrow evening.”

Elena frowned slightly. “For what?”

“Dinner.”

“With who?”

A brief pause.

“My family.”

The next evening came too quickly.

Elena didn’t ask questions this time.

She dressed carefully, choosing something simple but elegant, something that wouldn’t make her look like she was trying too hard. If they were going to judge her, she wasn’t going to make it easier.

When she stepped out, Adrian was already waiting.

He didn’t compliment her.

But his eyes lingered for a second.

That was enough.

The Voss family estate in the Hamptons was nothing short of a mansion — sprawling manicured lawns that could house a small village, private beach access with gentle waves lapping at the shore, and a grand colonial-style house with white columns and endless wings of rooms. It screamed old money and power.

Elena felt small the moment the car pulled up the long driveway.

She clutched the strap of her bag tighter, her simple dress suddenly feeling cheap and out of place against the sheer scale of everything around her.

The family had no idea she existed.

Adrian stepped out first. She followed.

“Relax,” he said without looking at her. “Just follow my lead.”

She let out a quiet breath. “You could have at least told me what I’m walking into.”

“You’ll figure it out.”

Before she could respond, he was already moving.

Of course he was.

Inside, the atmosphere shifted immediately.

The dining room was already set. Long table. Perfect arrangement. His family was there.

Waiting.

The moment they stepped in, the room went still.

Three pairs of eyes turned toward them.

His father sat at the head of the table, composed, unreadable, the kind of man who didn’t need to speak to command attention. His mother sat beside him, elegant and sharp, her gaze already scanning Elena from head to toe in a way that felt less like curiosity and more like assessment.

And then—

His sister.

The same woman whose wedding had been ruined.

Her expression hardened the second she saw Elena.

“Well,” his mother said slowly, breaking the silence, her voice smooth but edged. “This is… unexpected.”

Adrian didn’t hesitate.

“This is my wife.”

The words dropped into the room like a controlled explosion.

Silence followed.

Not shock.

Something sharper.

His sister let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh. “You’re joking.”

“I don’t joke about things like this,” Adrian replied calmly.

His father leaned back slightly, studying Elena with a measured look. “You got married,” he said.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Recently.”

That was all he gave.

His mother’s lips curved slightly. “And you didn’t think to inform your family?”

“It was a private decision.”

Her gaze shifted back to Elena, slower this time. “I see.”

The silence stretched.

Then—

“Of all people,” his sister said, staring directly at Elena, “you chose her?”

“I didn’t choose her for you,” Adrian replied before Elena could speak.

His sister’s laugh came again, sharper this time. “She humiliated me, Adrian. She stood in front of everyone and destroyed my wedding like it was nothing.”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“I didn’t do it for nothing,” she said, calm but firm. “He was cheating on you.”

“I knew,” his sister snapped immediately.

That changed everything.

Elena blinked. “You… knew?”

“Yes,” she said, her voice shaking now with something deeper than anger. “And it was my decision to deal with. Not yours. You didn’t save me—you embarrassed me.

That landed.

Before Elena could respond, his mother spoke again, her tone smooth and cutting.

“This is exactly why lines exist,” she said lightly. “You try to give the poor a seat at the table, and they remind you why they were never invited in the first place.”

The words settled heavily.

Sharp.

Deliberate.

Adrian moved.

Slow. Controlled.

“That’s enough.”

His voice wasn’t raised.

But it stopped everything.

His gaze moved to his mother, cold and steady. “You don’t speak about my wife that way.”

“Then perhaps your wife should learn her place,” she replied calmly.

Adrian didn’t look away.

“She already knows it,” he said. “Beside me.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Even his father shifted slightly at that.

His sister looked between them, disbelief written clearly across her face. “You’re actually serious about this.”

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Dinner happened after that.

But it wasn’t conversation.

It was observation.

Measured questions. Short answers. Long silences. The quiet clink of cutlery filling the gaps no one wanted to acknowledge.

Elena didn’t speak unless she had to.

Didn’t shrink.

Didn’t fight.

She just held herself together and endured it.

And somehow, that unsettled them more than anything she could have said.

By evening, they were shown to their room.

Elena stepped inside—

And stopped.

“There’s only one bed.”

The large king-sized bed sat in the center of the room, white sheets against soft moonlight pouring in from the windows. The ocean stretched endlessly beyond.

Adrian closed the door behind them. “My mother arranged the rooms.”

“Of course she did.”

“We’ll manage one night.”

The air shifted.

Silence again.

But this time… different.

They changed without speaking.

Elena slipped into the silk piece left out for her, the soft fabric brushing lightly against her skin. Adrian changed on the other side of the room, movements controlled, effortless.

They got into bed from opposite sides.

Distance.

Careful.

Deliberate.

“Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

But sleep didn’t come.

Time passed.

The sound of the ocean filled the room.

Then—

Movement.

Small.

Unintentional.

Elena shifted slightly in her sleep, her leg brushing against his.

Warmth met warmth.

She stilled.

So did he.

Neither moved immediately.

Then his arm shifted, resting lightly against her waist.

Not pulling.

Not claiming.

But there.

Her breath slowed.

His didn’t.

The space between them disappeared without either of them making the decision.

Her back met his chest.

His arm settled more firmly.

Close.

Too close.

Elena should have moved.

She didn’t.

Neither did he.

For a moment, it stayed like that—quiet, tense, dangerously comfortable.

Then—

Adrian exhaled sharply.

And pulled away.

Distance again.

Control restored.

But the damage was already done.

Elena stared into the dark, her heartbeat refusing to settle.

This was supposed to be simple.

Fake.

Temporary.

But lying there in the quiet, with the memory of him still lingering against her skin—

It didn’t feel simple anymore.

And that was the problem.

The night didn’t settle easily.Elena lay on her side, staring at the ceiling, the faint glow of the city slipping through the curtains. Sleep should have come. She was tired enough for it. But her mind refused to quiet. It kept going back.To the way his fingers had brushed her waist. The way it hadn’t felt accidental. The way, for a split second, it had felt like something else entirely. Her breath shifted.No.She turned, pulling the sheets closer, forcing the thought away before it could settle into something she didn’t want to examine. It didn’t matter. Not the touch. By seven, Elena was ready. She had taken her time with it, choosing something simple but deliberate—nothing loud, nothing that begged for attention, just enough to look like she belonged wherever he intended to take her. It wasn’t about impressing anyone. It was about not being caught off guard again. She waited in the living room, the quiet stretching slowly around her. At first, she sat. After a while, she stood, walking to the window, then back again. By seven, Elena was ready. She took her time getting dressed, not because she cared about impressing Adrian, but because she refused to walk into another room full of his world looking like she didn’t belong there. The dress she chose was black, smooth against her skin, fitted in a way that didn’t beg for attention but didn’t hide her either.
