Saska whispered, her eyes wide and filled with fear, as though she feared I might erupt violently.
My jaw clenched, my teeth pressing together so hard I felt the pressure in my skull. The hurt was familiar, but beneath it, a scorching anger surged, a wildfire that no words could douse. I had learned to endure verbal slights, to endure coldness, to swallow humiliation silently, but this, this blatant, intimate violation of our home, of my life, was a different kind of affront. I could not let it pass.
