They were gear teeth hidden in the concrete. "It’s a dial," Damian realized. "The entire press is a combination lock." I reached for the massive flywheel. It was cold, the iron biting into my palms. I didn't need a code; I needed a rhythm. I turned it three rotations to the left the "Vance" turn. Then, I stepped back and let Damian take the handle. "Now you," I whispered. "The Thorne turn. Four rotations to the right. The partner’s weight."

The men agree, so they line the cups up in front of each of them on their sides of the table. “When you start, you go in order down the line on each side, chug the beverage in your glass, turn the empty cup over, then try to tip the cup over so that it stands upright before the next person goes. Behind the pinwheel there’s a vibratile element that constantly engages with the eyelets of the wheel. It emits a steady clicking sound. Of course without your constant breeze it wouldn’t work.” “What do we need to wear this for?”

I loosened the screw head with the wire but there were three more screws and I was working on the second one when I heard voices. I quickly replaced the vent grate, hid the wire in my socks and sat on the bed, pretending. The door opened and two armed men came in. "On your feet. You're being moved." "Where?" I questioned. "The Architect wants you processed in the integration wing."
