After reading a whole bunch of those 'Monkie Kid' fan comics, I think a lot of artists get something pretty right—they don't just rehash the rivalry. You see flashbacks, before everything went south, where they’re training together or just sitting around talking, and it makes the betrayal hit so much harder. The current tension in a lot of modern-AU comics feels earned because of that history they’re constantly referencing. Sometimes it’s clumsy, but the ones that stick with me show Macaque’s envy not as pure evil, but as this twisted mirror of Wukong’s own ambition. It’s less about good vs. bad and more about two incredibly powerful, deeply lonely beings who understood each other better than anyone else ever could, and still couldn’t make it work.
That said, I get tired of the ones that soften Macaque too much. He’s not a sad little meow meow; he’s a formidable trickster in his own right. The best dynamics keep that competitive edge, even in friendship or reconciliation arcs. They’re both prideful idiots, and watching them navigate an apology—or more often, an unspoken truce built on shared action—is where the real meat is. You can feel the centuries of baggage in a single panel where they just share a look during a fight, no words needed.
